How are consumers affected by tourist harassment?

Author : teriann

Tourists seem to be everywhere in Jamaica although they they often stick to certain areas of the island.

It is not uncommon to see a group of persons of various ethnic origins roam our luxurious gardens at Devon House in Kingston or gather on our many beaches on the north coast.

Tourism’s Importance

How important is tourism to Jamaica? Well their continued arrival affects Jamaica economy in various ways.  They provide jobs in the hospitality sector of course but these jobs are also spread to taxi and bus operators, farmers and craft vendors.

Tourism also plays a vital role in encouraging foreign investment in the island’s many home grown products.

For example if a tourist comes to Jamaica and enjoys a particular flavour of drink then he might decide to inject needed capital to fund the company’s transition into a foreign market.

Tourist Harassment

One of the negative aspects faced by nearly all tourists to the island is the harassment they face by the residents. To be fair, those who are trying to sell their goods or offer services might think they are just being good promoters.

They do not consider chasing down tourists who have repeatedly told them no as a form of harassment because in our culture being aggressive is just a selling tactic.

The tourists of course are not amused, they respond as if being threatened and often in return refuse to leave the confines of the hotel or cruise ship to interact with the local residents.

How are consumers affected?

Well when tourists do not feel totally at ease, they shop less and stores lose potential customers. Since it is difficult to survive in this environment, stores then increase their prices in an effort to sustain their business.

This is of course bad news for consumers!

If all tourists remember about their island trip is being chased by over enthusiastic vendors they might not be so eager to repeat or recommend the experience. The fact is that our economy depends heavily on the tourism sector and any falling off in that area will have a negative financial impact on all consumers.

So let’s work at keeping our interactions with tourists courteous and respectful! What’s your take on the issue?

The government should do more to promote the local vendors. The residents are also more aggressive due to the fact they have to compete with the foreign investors shops. Increase support for home. There are gifted vendors who make wonderful products who have no platform to show and sell there products. Tourists should be briefed on the culture and things they don’t understand before they get off the plane or boat. The hotels should brief them upon their arrival. The residents especially taxis should charge regular prices. They are greedy and charge ridulous prices they should be held accountable for over pricing.

tourists are not only attacked by residents but are also attacked by police not knowing or not caring about International Treaty or laws or protocol and that too jeopardizes tourism as a tourist one decides to leave the island with negative experience one will hence share with family and friends abroad.
