Recently I heard a news story about some Jamaicans who had been the target of a scam. They had showed up at the Norman Manley Airport in Kingston for a flight to Barbados, only to discover their flight was never booked!
These unsuspecting citizens had been deceived into paying an agency who had guaranteed them jobs in Barbados.
It seemed that they had believed that jobs awaited them there and even accepted the many delays in their departure time.
Desperate times call for desperate measures, so those people must have been delighted to hear they were headed for a new opportunity.
Although the amount of money they lost was not disclosed, I am sure it’s money they could not afford to lose!
So how can you protect yourself? Well I have a few suggestions.
Check out multiple sources before handing over any money. Ask to see some records to ensure that the agency is a registered company. Do background checks with other companies that have done business with them. However, if all fails, demand a signed contract before paying out any funds. Be cautious, when in doubt walk away!
There have also been cases of people posing as police officers. They try to lure the unsuspecting shopper to leave their bags with them.
In this situation you will need to be extra cautious. Check their badges carefully and pay attention to what they are doing with your property. Never leave your bag with anyone.
What else do you think can be done to prevent others from being caught up in such scams?
