More Taxes for Tourists?

Author : teriann

Beautiful Beach!

I know that it is not politically correct to say this but I think we should toot
our horn a bit more!  Jamaica is a well sought after Caribbean destination and it’s about time we gain something more from the title, ‘World’s best Caribbean destination’.

How can we do this?  Well, since we have what they want why not pay a little extra to enjoy it?

There is a proposal by the Government for an increase of the tax for tourists from U.S. $10 to $20.

If it does happen, my hope is that the money collected will go to maintaining our natural resources or improving the health and education sectors

What’s your take on the issue?

Should the tax on tourists be increased? Click the link below to read the full article:

I’ve always believed that its time that JA implement a landing visa fees on foreign visitors arriving in our airports, US$10.00
will not keep away anyone, everytime we turn around USA application non-refundable fees R
being raised and thousands still line up to pay, even those who claims they cant buy books for children or pay for schools.

Ppl travelling from Cayman to pick up visa to the USA here should be charged a user fee upon landing, after all we’ve school them, give
medical treatments to them, aid them & JDF copters toiled for them in the past now they have hospitals and schools they, say our citizens requires visa to go there and forgets our kindness its time we stop acting like the underdog who wants to be everyones friend so we lay under the hull while they peed on us.

2-3 Cashiers can be set up where these ppl pay as they land. and take the reciepts to the immigration officers to be stamped, then each airport cashier will have to turn in funds and copy of the reciepts that coincides with the immigration officers reciepts at the end of their shifts; since we have a lot of co-conspiritors working in these places mgmt should have the cash register installed with
the camera that can show every transaction so
the money can be accounted for. I think US$10-12 would be eough at this time.

    The hoteliers and Bartlett
    only seem concerned with one
    part of this country,them
just seem to want to give
    tourists everything for
    little or nothing while
poor ppl eat air pie, $7000
or $8000 that them pay front
    desks and Admin workers
there is very small, for a
good place to live costly, no
    wonder so much illicit things
go on in these area, JAmaica
    on sale cheap.

I total disagree in taxation with regards to visitors to our shores. Our wanton waste of the present tax and the assumption that government has the right to extract more and more tax from our and our visitor pockets will never be satisfied! What we need is less government and more accountability. Can anyone in government please tell me why we have chopped up Kingston and other parts of the country into so many constituencies and given to every political community their our Rep in the House? Coupled to this is is all the other ministries official that comes with a ministry. I suggest that first government cut their numbers. 2. Get out of the practice of mingling in activities such as horse racing and similar activities. What government has to do in that business to have a rep on! 3. Reduce there benefits both medical and gratuity to the lever of which ordinary Jamaican and civil service is entitled to. A lot of Jamaican pay there tax and get very little benefit in return. Any more tax on visit on us will just make the sinking hole just a little bigger.

This is wonderful news, we need to pay more taxes, more taxes and more taxes, since we are not paying enough.

  5. teriann says:

Well Jo we will see how the tourists will respond to the new taxes!

  6. HenryC says:

Look! Paying more taxes is not the answer. If you want to kill the goose that laid the golden egg do so. There are many other places to go other than Jamacia where tourists are welcome without the crime and additional taxes.

Wake up you cannot compete for the tourist dollar because of all the extra things you are requesting the tourist to put up with.

I am an old time Jamacia vistor but my patience is waning.

Keep selling the airfares, rooms & liquor to them cheap they’ll come $10-20 wont keep them away.

  8. Sammy says:

Yes I say tax them some more. After 35 years of trying to get things right with that industry now that we finally seem to be performing well the first thing we do is try to drag the industry back down. visitors (Including visiting Jamaicans) by air to Jamaica are already paying US $54 dollars in taxes to jamaica out of a total of $105 for a R/T ticket. Where is the money going? The security fees charged by the government is certainly not going to pay security personell at the airport. God bless what they get.
We need to cut the size of the Govt and stop taxing the daylights out of our non performing industries and try and figure out how we can enhance their performance so that more jobs can be created in the private sctor.
The name of the game is more private sector jobs and growing the industries we currently have. Saddling our industries with more taxes will only cause our economy to contract in the long run.

Many will be upset about what I am about to say but their are other caribbean islands to visit, it is the beaches that is the attrraction. Mexico, Puerto Rico, Antiqua and others that have improved amenities with more freedom to experience the culture. With the world economical state, increases does not always mean revenues. It only makes people cut out expenditures which are not necessary. I am American and constantly defending JA in a social circle. Truth be told read posted experiences and many have not so great reviews. We are attracted to the sunny beaches without it tourism is obsolete. As beautiful as some of the country is your list could be exclusive. Companies are constantly looking for hotels for block of rooms for business occassions or events. What I hear all the times are safety concerns and extortion amongst transportation cost. What saddens me the most is throughout this world black owned nations hold the source of the world desired resources yet our people never benefit. Stop stepping on the back of others and extend a hand.
