AE86 Update – 2

Author : cmunroe

The transformation of the AE86 is painfully slow, but each step taken towards completion is reason to celebrate and justification to give thanks. I am grateful.

The long awaited enhancement of the ‘kotch’ ( brakes) is in full swing. The suggested improvement of the front rotors and calipers has been taken and applied. At the rear, however, I have opted to ‘break’ with tradition somewhat.

Most will tell you, rotors and calipers at all corners is the way forward and I will agree. But, after observing an AE86 owned by a master-tuner/builder in Time Attack mode, I have decided to pursue that course of action at a later date.

The machine I saw, from which I drew inspiration, is no stranger to high horsepower and is capable of ripping 11 second passes when the 1320ft appears! It is a beast and as the owner explained, he prefers ‘drums’ at the back. So, for the time being, I will retain the drums until such time.

These drums will strike a competitive note!

After replacing essential parts, a bit of color will make her (drums) lovely again.

Front rotors skimmed – socializing with the calipers.

Left side – an unruly caliper has abandoned the rotor.

The AE86 needs a shower, but even that can wait.

I will introduce you to some gauges next time.
