Circuit Racing: The battle for Caribbean supremacy – CMRC Round 1

Author : cmunroe

Jamaicans love motorsports and they love battles involving our Caribbean neighbors even more! Question – What is more rewarding or fulfilling than seeing one of our local gladiators – David ‘King‘ Summerbell, Doug ‘Hollywood‘ Gore or Peter ‘Zoom Zoom‘ Rae revving their domesticated monster senseless and presenting a well-deserved loss to the hapless driver from the dot on the map – Barbados. Answer – Seeing it being done repeatedly!

Fortunately the divine being, despite the recession, still answers prayers and in May, for the past couple of years, Christmas comes a bit early for motor racing fans in Jamaica.

The Caribbean Motor Racing Championship (CMRC) assembles the best the region has to offer, in terms of machines (race cars) and drivers and gives them 3 Rounds, on 3 different tracks, in 3 countries, to separate the men from the toddlers!

Based on what has occurred in previous years, the event has been elevated to – Must Attend – status and if you have been to any Round, you will willingly agree.

Next weekend, May 26th – 27th Dover Raceway will be the stage for the Caribbean’s best drivers. The race-meet titled -  Caribbean Invasion – if it maintains tradition, will ignite furious flames of entertaining passion, as drivers late-brake, blip and downshift and execute crowd-appreciating, aggressive overtaking maneuvers.

The Jamaican drivers who will be competing in the CMRC apparently will not be finalised until qualifying and apparently, some of the usual suspects from Barbados (the Maloney clan) will not be in attendance, but, I wouldn’t worry too much. A full day of racing is still on the schedule.

The ‘King‘ and his TOTAL machine will be in the building, aided and abetted by Doug Gore’s ATL machine which will definitely add riveting drama. Stuart Williams’ Lotus (Barbados), I have learnt, will be present and if Team Guyana is present we will have more than enough combatants to deliver ceaseless, wholesome pleasure!

Summerbell’s machine.

Doug and his machine.

The Jamaica Race Drivers Club will have a press briefing today at 10:30am at the Sports Development Foundation (31 Phoenix Ave, Kingston), at the end of which, I should be armed with enough accurate information, to speak with certainty, about who will and will not be present.
