The science and technology showpiece of motorsports – Formula 1 will have its opening dance for the 2013 season this weekend. Testing and all the get to know me better exercises, involving machines, circuits and teams are all over. It is time to race!
The establishment in F1, the old boys club, is still in the process of reclaiming that which was lost. Ferrari and McLaren are still at a loss, trying to fathom why grasping their former championship glory days is so elusive. Ferrari is relying on their tested hired guns, Alonso and Massa. Can they deliver the 2013 championship?
McLaren’s hand was forced and they lost the obviously talented, but possibly puerile and impatient Lewis Hamilton. Can Button and the new acquisition Perez deliver the 2013 championship?
Red Bull Racing, since 2010, has emerged as the team to beat and with arguably, F1′s best designer in recent times – Adrian Newey and F1′s best driver – Seb Vettel in their deck of cards, their armor for the time being seems bulletproof. But, as we all know the race is never won until the checkered unfurls.
So, the 2013 season will rev away on Sunday, if the weather allows it. Qualifying has been rescheduled as I type and the usual suspects are all grabbing their share of the highlights and headlines. Rosberg is obviously not intimidated by his World Champion teammate Hamilton and his performance thus far should be encouraging for Mercedes. Is there an upset in the making?
Tomorrow is both qualifying and race-day. The pressure will multiply 100-fold, but that is what racing is all about. Which driver/team will win the season opener?
