In less time than it takes Usain Bolt to dash from starting blocks to finish line, Marc Marquez has emerged as the major force to be reckoned with for the 2013 season. His record-breaking performance thus far has caught most of the motorcycling world by surprise, but, if you were following Moto 2 in 2012, chances are you were in the know.
I must admit that when it was announced that Rossi would be riding his trusty Yamaha for the 2013 season, I was excited. Memories of scintillating battles involving the ‘Doctor’ and his ambitious teammate, the current defending champion, Jorge Lorenzo, enhanced eager anticipation as the season-opener drew near.
Stoner
As I have stated before, Stoner’s 2012 exit meant Marquez’s 2013 entrance – the MotoGP world has simply not been the same! With 10 races in the book before Brno, Marquez riding on the back of a 3 race win streak, appeared to be a safe bet. But Cal Crutchlow had other ideas – he stole pole!
Jorge Lorenzo, in the eyes of many, still has a lot to prove and at the beginning of the race, despite being in recovery mode and starting at P5, he galloped to the front and grabbed the lead. Marquez clung to his leathers – he eased into second, while his teammate, Dani Pedrosa, completed the trio.
Lorenzo, the rookie and Pedrosa set the tone of the race and it was evident, to even the blind, that stimulating action would unfold as the laps disappeared. The weather made several threats but nothing much materialised.
Marquez
With a handful of laps to go,Marquez the magician, pulled a trick and passed Lorenzo. Lorenzo was reluctant to concede and he fought valiantly. But, he wasn’t man enough at Brno, Marquez was too determined and yes, he was quick. Marquez eventually silenced Lorenzo and apparently with his ego wounded, Lorenzo submitted to Pedrosa’s request and gave him P2.
Incidentally, the finishing order at Brno, reflects each rider’s position in the championship – Marquez -213 points, Pedrosa – 187 points, Lorenzo – 169 points and Rossi – 143 points.
So, a pattern is emerging – Marquez wins – again! Who will stop the rookie’s progress? Rossi?
