When major motorsports events are staged at idyllic locations on the international scene, it is the norm to have a weekend of activities celebrating/honoring the automobile, sport-bike etc. The activities are essentially designed to maximize the fun factor and the experience for the fans, who usually take over the city/town and make it their own for the weekend.
We are sadly not at that stage yet, with rallying being the only exception (a rally is usually run over 2-3 days) and as such our best bet is to seek to heighten the experience of the fans on race day. Circuit racing at Dover Raceway in St Ann is still on the rise and fortunately the fans come out in huge numbers for each event. There is always room for improvement however and there can only be gains to be had from making a good product better.
Drifting
Drifting has spread from its ‘birthplace’ in Japan and now the sport which thrives on power decimating rubber is being welcomed at tracks and facilities worldwide. There are still those few moments at Dover when there is no activity on the circuit and to keep the fans inebriated with excitement, a little drifting wouldn’t hurt.
A true drift event uses a few corners. At Dover the large sweeper at the end of the start-finish straight (Goodyear corner) and the Tyre Wharehouse corner before the huge grandstand area would be ideal. We have very good drivers who usually put their skills on display at the dexterity events and I know they would be more than willing to provide the entertainment drifting guarantees.
If possible, a drift series could materialize which would have a round at each race meet at Dover. Who knows, maybe the Drift King, Keiichi Tsuchiya, could be invited to give a special demo run!
