Drag Racing: Who will steal the show at Drag Challenge #3?

Author : cmunroe

A friend of mine was trying to determine what time he would arrive at Vernamfield on Sunday. I would put him in the ‘early bird’ category – he wants to see everything! So it would be commonplace for him to be present as soon as the action begins in the morning – during qualifying.

When it was brought to his attention that the Evil Trio (Cayman machines) was present on Jamaican soil solely to grab Vernamfield’s concrete and rocket to notoriety, a visible transformation occurred. He is a Honda militant, a jihadist of the Honda faith! So when it became evident that the Evil Trio’s turbocharged Honda had plans to shell Vernamfield, his glee breached the outer limits of his brain and flooded his face with an array of ecstatic expressions. He dived in an irretrievable state of confusion – “mi naa go sleep, mi a deh deh from sunrise!”

NDRC

The NDRC’s Nestle Supligen Drag Racing series has provided a laboratory for drag racing executioners to research, develop and on race day, display their prowess at stalking and terminating their prey. Drag racers have embraced the facilities provided and the quest to excel drives the competitors to push their machines to ‘scratch your head’ low elapsed times their manufacturers had no concept of.

Do you remember when there was a yawning gap between naturally aspirated and turbocharged machines? At Drag Challenge #2 I stood in front of a tent. Relaxing, in an undisturbed fashion, were two immaculately attired machines brandishing Honda emblems. One machine was dressed in an ego-boosting turbocharged kit while the other, which was more ostentatious in appearance, spoke through naturally aspirated lips. Those lips told an incredible tale of the journey Jamaican drag racing has travelled. The machine generated more attention than Kim K topless at the mall! Surprisingly, it was the quicker of the two machines and it went about its business in a frightening manner. A ten seconds machine was always the Holy Grail for drag racers (think Fast and Furious) and the most often travelled path is paved with turbocharging components.

Ken T

Well, Kenneth Timoll – Ken T – had other ideas. Ideas which he revealed at Drag Challenge#2. Vernamfield was stunned! But in a good way – a ten seconds naturally aspirated machine – on local soil! Will it get better than that at Drag Challenge #3?

At Drag Challenge#1, the M.A.D. man rolled out a naturally aspirated 11 seconds demon. At Drag Challenge#2 Ken T appeared with his version of The Terminator. Do we detect a rivalry? No comment! The fans will never complain – they will rejoice at the motorized battles.

Dean Shaw

At Drag Challenge #2 there were numerous front-page stories and it can be argued that Ken T’s feat was the most significant – if only Dean Shaw had remained at home. But, Dean Shaw appeared in race-trim! His, was a huge burden, but he remained true to the task and when he presented his machine at the line, next to the Red Donkey, we expected fireworks of Time Square proportions. We were not disappointed. The Titans battled and we lived in the moment – priceless!

What should we expect at Drag Challenge#3? The Cayman machines seek to impress. Kishore Williams has returned to drag racing. His naturally aspirated machine – the circuit racing machine – 1600 massaged cubic centimeters of delight, ripped a 12.4 pass at Test and Tune! Orville will chase 8 seconds. The mega-battles will continue to erupt in the bustling 10-11-12 and 13 seconds classes. We will not have time to process the speed-frenzy!

My question will be answered tomorrow – Who will steal the show at Drag Challenge #3?
