MotoGP: Lorenzo stumbles, Marquez crashes and Rossi wins!

At the Siverstone GP, caught in the moment and possibly annoyed with happenings in Formula One, the commentator flung a bruising punch. He spoke words to the effect of – Formula One fans, eat your hearts out! This is MotoGP at Silverstone!

I found his remarks amusing but accurate! MotoGP at Silverstone was delivering what F1 lacks and craves – continuous swapping of positions at the front, courtesy of determined, daring and forceful drivers who were claiming their share of the TV rights!

The Silverstone GP was billed as one which had major implications for the championship because Yamaha’s megastars – Rossi and Lorenzo, were tied at P1 and the defending World Champion, Marquez, was trying to remain relevant. Marquez claimed pole, Rossi and Lorenzo sat on row 2, so the stage was set for a pulsating event.

Apparently, Mother Nature had jealousy over for tea and after the discussions she felt it necessary to deliver her blessings on the GP – it rained.

In motorsports, it is accepted that the greatest drivers can deliver despite the circumstances and on any surface. At Silverstone, the suspicious circumstances – rain – presented a Champion’s Moment. The only question was – Who would rise to the occasion?

The red lights played their role and left and from the onset it seemed as if Lorenzo would execute his – zip to the front then disappear – act. But, Marquez was not impressed, he kept him at bay, long enough for Rossi to get settled and begin his forward march.

Rossi, after wrestling with Marquez briefly for P2, inserted Lorenzo as his new target. Lorenzo was caught rather easily and dispatched in a similar fashion! Rossi, P1, in front of a loudly cheering British crowd. The Doctor then went into the ‘Silver Fox’ phase. He dictated the pace of the race.

Surprisingly, Lorenzo, like a sinking stone in a massive lake, faded rapidly. Marquez chased the Doctor, but he was outgunned by a supreme sharpshooter. Marquez’ race and possibly his championship hopes came to a crashing end when he lost the Honda’s front- end and went diving at Silverstone.

Marquez’ kind gesture possibly motivated Lorenzo – he resurfaced to P4. But, at Silverstone, there was room for only one King. Petrucci attempted what would have been a historic coup, but was forced to settle with his first podium- P2.

Rossi mastered the rain, proved his mettle and reigned over his peers!
Rossi will leave the United Kingdom leading the championship. He will head home for the next round!

Any bets – who will win in Misano?
