Drag Racing: Drag Challenge #4-Test and Tune

Author : cmunroe

It rained profusely for a day or two, rumor suggests that some persons were searching for the Ark! As if by design though, Sunday morning brought a yellow sheet of sunshine, so there was no rain on Vernamfield’s parade.

Test and Tune was its usual bustling, ‘run’ and hurry to join the line again-activity we have grown to accept. The model (Test and Tune) frowns upon door to door competition, so only single runs are accommodated. However, any attempt to destroy the floorboard with a zealous accelerator and dismantle the gearbox with aggressive yanking of the ‘grab a gear’ control unit are welcomed with rapturous applause from the gearheads. Test and Tune facilitates specific luxuries to both competitor and spectator which race-day does not allow. At Test and Tune, you can view a machine from different points along the 1320ft – sections you would not have access to on race-day.

GTR

It is from the previously mentioned vantage point my current account hails. I was contacted via telepathy, so I rolled in at about the same time that a Nissan Skyline R34 GTR was being summoned by head-chef and occasional bottle-washer, Stephen Gunter.

There are some things in this earthly existence that surpasses your once-thought limitless excitement threshold. When released, the howling, barking, wailing, bellowing and yelping blend of creatures the GTR held captive, went searching for solace. They knew that peace would only be had when they broke the beam at the 1320′s end. Their pace, like the Americans when they visited Iraq, manufactured Shock and Awe.

Like booming notes from Stone Love’s musical ensemble, on what was previously a monotonous Wednesday, the GTR, at full-song, mid-track, would invade and ransack the sector of the brain responsible for happiness! If you heard it, you would have been a victim of RB26-infiltration, but your soul would be thankful for what it received – a Nutri-Bullet blend of inner peace and unrestricted servings of ecstasy! All hail the GTR! Will it race on Sunday?

The usual suspects were present and went through their program with aplomb. The Lueboyz’ R35 GTR waved eyes laced green with envy and absorbed the 1320ft, repeatedly. Definitely a crowd favourite! Will it race Sunday?

There were some machines, when you saw them ‘blaze’ by you knew they were ripping concrete. A certain red Starlet had the appropriate poise for a fast time. Will it race on Sunday?

PULSTAR

I did not see it when it staged or when it left the line. When I saw it, it was hurtling along the runway, a millisecond or two from lift-off! It was hustling at a hurried, purposeful, occasionally scary, but a visible rapid rate. There was concern though – the machine was accompanied by a whispering smoke trail. When it aborted flight (take-off), I investigated. I expected to see and hear depression, considering that there were signs of damage.

What I saw, heard and participated in was an unexpected celebration! The Williams Auto and Service Center crew (WASC – Orville Williams, family and friends) were all speaking in rather loud and joyous tones. I was mystified, but not for long. With an eye-popping reaction time – a crew member said – “mi tink it bruk whe!” – and a pitiless driver (Orville Williams), despite abusing both rod and block, the PulStar stunned the concrete with a 9.0 seconds pass! Orville has visions of 8.5 seconds! Will it race on Sunday? Red Donkey beware!
