Thrilling and spectacular are words spoken when mention is made of the fastest circuit in F1 history – Autodromo di Monza. How fast? While testing, Montoya sped to 231 mph! At a track which has more history than a museum and where the support for Ferrari is as obvious as the red on the F10, Alonso handed out treats to the fans by soaring to pole position for the Italian GP.
But Alonso had more planned. At the end of the race a spectacle which has no comparison, confirmed that the Tifosi invasion had commenced and the as the fans erupted with celebratory noises, Enzo Ferrari smiled approvingly. Alonso and Massa had accomplished a major coup. The 2010 F1 season at times has been an uphill struggle for Ferrari but, on Sunday, the sun shone brilliantly on Maranello and the F1 gods embraced the red wigged fanatics.
Alonso
Alonso was drop-kicked by Button at the start and despite not having the pace of the Ferrari, Button held the lead and threatened to spoil the carnival. Hamilton’s championship stumbled as he got too close to Massa, made contact and out he went. Hamilton, obviously dejected, sought refuge in the motor home.
Massa held his own but was never better than 3rd. Button blinked first, he pitted before Alonso. When Alonso stopped, Ferrari delivered. Alonso exited next to Button, but the Spaniard is an animal, he leapt ahead to P1. Alonso left Button and crossed the finish line comfortably ahead.
This was one of those races where the drama was fast-paced and concentrated at the front as the age-old rivalry between McLaren and Ferrari played out. This time around Ferrari 1 upped McLaren and had two machines on the podium.
Hamilton’s misfortune pleased Webber. Webber drove home in 6th and he leads the championship with 187pts, followed by Hamilton (182pts) and Alonso (166pts).
At Monza, Alonso earned the top step, the horse is prancing and Italy’s economy may get a boost as the champagne will flow like the Amazon into the wee hours of the morning.
A thin points spread and five rounds remaining, F1 fans are still living in their perfect, exciting world.
