Question – Who owns the fastest, naturally aspirated, Honda Integra DC5 Type R (DC5R) in Kingston?
I wanted 1 answer, but little did I know that I was throwing meat into a shark infested pool! During the furious debate I managed to extricate 1 name – Andrew ‘Type 2NR’ Palmer. ‘2NR’ as he is known on wheelsjamaica.com, is genetically linked to controversy. He is notorious for waging a war of words in his posts, but even his detractors agree that –“2NR machine a run!”
I met 2NR and after a few snaps and a lecture about what has been done to the car, we went for a little rip session in his DC5R.
2NR is an enthusiast and if allowed to, he has the ability to talk forever about his machine. A true Honda head! I was more interested in the machine’s ability to devour asphalt and spit it out with alacrity when asked to stop. There were several moments when he went through the ¼ mile stance but, I will tell you about the best of the bunch.
We are on a dual carriageway with more than enough room to play with. The machine comes to a stop. First gear, the revs raise their heads. The race inspired bap, bap, sound of launch control intervenes. The right foot responds as if directed by the ‘tree’ at Jamwest – clutch, what clutch?
VTEC
The front wheels shriek as combustion created forces propel them forward. My eyes are glued to the speedometer and the ‘rev clock’. As the needle hits a hair above 4000 rpm, the experience intensifies and the Type R’s VTEC bellows its intent. At 4300 rpm, Chungy’s expertise takes shape and the needle rockets towards the red line, quicker than a hooker after a potential customer!
2nd gear. Still in VTEC, the frenetic pace continues. 3rd gear. The Type R hunts for a non-existent finish line and a cheering crowd. The engine note is now at full song, strumming exhilarating harmonies. I nod my head in approval and then reality interrupted. As the unfeeling stop light approached, Brembos were employed and the champion white, DC5R projectile slowed considerably, to rejoin the mundane land of Toyota Corolla and Nissan Sunny.
The debate will not end here and until 2NR grasps the requisite time slip (Jamwest) to confirm his machine’s credibility, the war of words will persist. But, there is no denying this – 2NR machine a run!
