If there was any doubt relating to which of the two protagonists – Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg – was the better driver, Lewis Hamilton, at Abu Dhabi silenced even his most vocal critics.
The defending World Champion made it abundantly clear that if Nico Rosberg intends to take his crown, a wrestling bout of epic proportions will be the decider. Hamilton did not only snatch pole in Abu Dhabi, he took it with a burst of speed and enthralling performance that bewildered his competitors and left Rosberg looking feeble and beaten. Rosberg was quicker than the chasing pack though and slipped into second immediately behind his prey.
Ricciardo entered the fray with his Red Bull machine and I am certain Hamilton is on his knees somewhere praying for the miracle he needs to thwart his team-mate’s plan.
Ferrari has not had a lot to cheer about in 2016, but Raikkonen represented well during qualifying and narrowly missed out on P3.
The stage is set ladies and gentlemen. Hamilton chose the best route – his destiny is in his hands and he sits comfortably at P1. He will try to avoid a lethargic start and he has had a few. And after the rocket start he hopes to get, he will also be depending on others to insert some distance between himself and Rosberg. Without their destabilising involvement, Rosberg will secure his first hold on F1′s top drivers’ prize.
Whose side will fate be on? Will Rosberg dance to victory’s tune? Will Hamilton climb the impossible mountain and concoct a thrilling brew?
The Abu Dhabi GP will tell?
