Ott Tanak won the drivers’ title in 2019. Tommi Makinen and his squad provided the tools he needed to secure the championship. His success, it could be argued, was just reward for the commitment Toyota made to the WRC program. But, at times, enough is never enough.
Hyundai Motorsport grabbed, what some would argue, was the more significant silverware – the manufacturers’ title. It was no secret that the Hyundai was regarded as the best machine on the stages. And possibly, that played a role in Tanak’s decision to jump ship.
OGIER
But, when Tanak migrated to Korean pastures, arguably the most potent force on the WRC stages – multiple champion Ogier – snatched a seat at Toyota Gazoo Racing. Ogier is a ravenous beast, who is rather adept at weaving a path to both victory and championship success.
And if what team-boss, Makinen, stated is accurate – a lighter and more powerful machine, at Ogier’s fingertips, might prove to be a Stephen King-conceived, horrifying reality, for Tanak.
Tanak will also face stiff competition from his team-mate Neuville who would thoroughly enjoy upstaging the World Champion. Toyota Gazoo Racing, with the crafty Makinen at the helm, will leave no 10-nut loose, in order to maintain a stranglehold on what was gained in 2019.
And for insatiable WRC fans, Hyundai Motorsport retained a gem – the other Sebastien – Loeb – will also be jumping in a Hyundai!
Did Ott Tanak make a mistake? Ogier does not know how to lose at Rally Monte Carlo. You do not want to miss Rally Monte Carlo Jan. 23-26!
