In a race which resembled the Rio Cobre during Tropical Storm Nicole, the drama breached the asphalt and flowed effortlessly into the stands and the pits. Red Bull Racing (RBR) silenced all of the critics. Sebastian Vettel, had moments in the 2010 season when his mental state was questioned. RBR’s management, including team owner Dietrich Mateschitz, stuck to their principles – no team orders and after winning in Abu Dhabi in dramatic fashion, Vettel’s tearful response to his team said it all. “Thank you, I love you”.
Alonso began the weekend leading the World Championship. Essentially, if he finished on the podium the crown was his. Ferrari fans thought they were in the driving seat, bearing in mind that Webber, Alonso’s closest threat was behind. But, races aren’t won on paper.
Vettel
When the red lights lost their power, Vettel held his position, Hamilton followed, but Alonso gave up 3rd to Button. He didn’t know it then, but that was where Alonso’s quest for the championship ended. In an uncanny twist, it was Ferrari’s former hero, Michael Schumacher who possibly assisted with the fatal blow that sealed Alonso’s fate. Schumi’s heavy right foot manufactured a spin, which altered the face of the race.
The safety car was deployed. Petrov and Rosberg pitted, strategies which murdered Alonso’s game plan. When Alonso pitted and rejoined he was trapped behind an immovable Petrov with the podium nowhere in sight! Alonso didn’t recover. He failed to display the fight or the hunger I was expecting and spent the rest of the GP languishing in the Renault’s exhaust.
Christian Horner
Christian Horner never lost sight of what it was all about. He was right all along. Vettel was number 1, a fact he proved consistently in qualifying. RBR’s machine was fast, the chassis was definitely the best and despite a few misfires, the results now confirm that their driver, Vettel, is also the best.
Vettel gave a young RBR team their first victory in 2009 (China) and the stars in Abu Dhabi agreed that it was only appropriate that Vettel handed the team their first drivers’ championship. Congratulations Sebastian Vettel, the 2nd German to win the championship. At age 23, the youngest and new F1 World Champion Sebastian Vettel!
