Are we spending too much?

Author : teriann

It might seem as if we never have enough money to meet all our needs.  Prices seem to be rising even as we struggle to purchase basic food items.  Despite this financial pressure, some people are still spending too much money.

One of the ways people spend too much is a preoccupation on getting the latest gadget. The phone craze in Jamaica results in persons discarding perfectly good phones and purchasing expensive smart phones.

There are many persons who have capitalized on this trend and offer customers the opportunity to purchase slightly damaged or used phones at below their market value.

Do you really need the latest upgrade to your phone? After all in a few months, that model will be outdated and you will be forced to continually purchase new phones.

Entertainment  & Travel

‘All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’. This is a common saying that highlights the importance of spending time participating in relaxing activities after working hard all week.  Whereas it’s healthy to relax, the way in which some people relax can really dent the budget.

Some people decide to use their down time to watch movies in a theatre, but those tickets can cost up to $4000 or more depending on the type of movie and choice of seats.

For example 3D movies and box seats incur a higher cost and if you purchase any food there will be even more money spent as even the smallest snack is expensive.

Those who are able to travel, delight in making the trips abroad once every year. These trips can be expensive as there are other fees to be paid apart from the cost of the ticket.  Consumers also have to factor in purchasing spending money, costs of transportation and luggage fees.

So what are the alternatives?

Cheaper Options

Home movie theatre systems are a cheaper option that going out to watch a movie.  Simply plan ahead and select a movie that you will enjoy watching from the comfort of your own home.

Invite over a few friends and create your own snacks to complete preparations for an enjoyable evening.

What about trying a ‘staycation’? Instead of booking a flight, try spending your vacation at home.

There are numerous local attractions all over the island for you to enjoy.  Take the time to get to know your home and research which attraction you would like to visit.

If you really need a new phone you can try a used one or one that is not a top of the line brand that will still give you access to its features but is more affordable.

So do you spend too much? Let me hear from you! Drop me a line!
